Volunteer FAQs

Why should I volunteer?

  • Be a part of the excitement inside the ropes
  • Help our community host a top quality PGA TOUR event
  • Make a difference in your community
  • Network with other volunteers, vendors and staff
  • Receive commemorative volunteer apparel
  • Build friendships that will last a lifetime

Why is there a fee to volunteer?

So that the Tournament charities can benefit as much as possible! Your registration payment helps offset the cost of the volunteer package.

Who can volunteer?

Corporations, charities, community groups, students and individuals are all encouraged to become a part of the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open.

I am a returning volunteer from 2016. Do I need to sign-up again this year?

Yes! We need to know that you are coming back. Each volunteer is required to register online every single year.

How do I sign up to be a volunteer if I've never volunteered before (or it's been a few years since I last volunteered)?

Once registration opens on August 1, 2016, please register as a NEW VOLUNTEER. You will be asked to enter up to three (3) committee preferences. You may also indicate what committees you have worked on in the past. The Tournament Office will make every effort to place you in one of your preferred options.

Do I have to buy a uniform?

All volunteers are required to purchase a volunteer package. This includes a volunteer badge, parking pass, apparel, hat and meals on days you work during tournament week.

We are requesting that volunteers wear khaki pants, skorts or shorts (No Cargo Style Pants or Shorts –  Shorts must be to knee-length) to keep everyone coordinated while out on course.

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

Anyone age 18 and older by January 23, 2017 can take part in more than fifteen volunteer opportunities.

What should I expect after registering?

Within a few weeks of registering, you will receive an email confirmation that includes your committee assignment and your chairperson’s contact information.

When are Volunteer Trainings and Uniform Distributions?

Tournament Trainings and Uniform Distributions will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017.

What is my volunteer working assignment?

Your committee chairperson will notify you of your scheduled work times and any additional important information a few weeks before the tournament.

Individual committee-related inquiries, including questions about your assignment and schedule, should be directed to your committee chairperson. You may log into your account at any time to contact your committee chair, check your schedule and update your availability.

Which days are volunteers required?

Volunteers are mainly required Wednesday-Sunday of tournament week, but assistance is needed before and after the tournament.

Please note, there is a minimum of three (3) work shifts/days required in order to be a Volunteer but encourage volunteers to donate more time if possible.

If there is a delay, play may continue on Monday, which will require some volunteers.

How long would I be expected to work each day?

Depending on your committee assignment, the average day is 6-8 hours long. Some positions require longer days, particularly Wednesday, Thursday and Friday when the Tournament is played on two courses.

How many volunteers are needed?

We currently have about 1,000 volunteers that help run the Farmers Insurance Open, but we could always use an extra hand! There is no set number of volunteers required to run the tournament. Volunteers are needed for all the committees. The Marshals committee is the largest and is always looking for additional members. We also have a need for volunteers on the following committees: ShotLink Laser Team, Ambassadors, Mobile Device Committee as well as a few others.
