San Diego, Calif. – November 29, 2016 – Each year, with the help of more than 100,000 volunteers nationwide, the PGA TOUR and its tournaments raise millions of dollars for charity, with more than $2.14 billion raised to date. Volunteers in the San Diego area have helped the Farmers Insurance Open contribute more than $34 million through funding and in-kind programs for local charities since the Century Club’s inception in 1961.
Now the public can contribute to the charitable giving at the Farmers Insurance Open by voting in the PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge sponsored by Myrbetriq® (mirabegron). In its third year, this friendly competition honors the talent and dedication of the TOUR’s volunteers, including 850 from the San Diego area.
From now until 11 a.m. PT on Saturday of tournament week, January 28, 2017, participating volunteer teams are asking friends, family, co-workers and the general public to cast a vote for them at pgatour.com/volunteers. Those who do not know a volunteer can vote directly for the tournament. At the end of the voting period, the volunteer team with the most votes will earn the opportunity to present a $10,000 check on behalf of Astellas Pharma US, Inc., to his or her charity of choice from a list selected by the tournament. The tournament also has the opportunity to earn up to an additional $65,000 in charitable bonus funds based on the total number of votes received collectively by volunteers and the tournament.
“Volunteers are vital to the success of the Farmers Insurance Open, and the PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge is a terrific way to honor these individuals for their contributions to the tournament while also supporting worthwhile charitable organizations that are making a difference in our community,” said Peter Ripa, CEO, Farmers Insurance Open.
The PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge will be held at 16 tournaments during the 2017 PGA TOUR season and builds upon more than $1 million donated by Astellas Pharma US, Inc., the pharmaceutical manufacturer of Myrbetriq® (mirabegron), to tournament charities over the course of the company’s sponsorship with the TOUR. Additional information is available at pgatour.com/volunteers.
“Our partnership with the PGA TOUR is reflective of the Astellas commitment to giving back by supporting programs that have a significant impact in the communities where we work and live,” said Walt Johnston, senior vice president, Sales & Marketing, Urology and Hospital, Astellas Pharma US, Inc.
The tournament takes place from January 26-29, 2017, at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif. It features 156 of the world’s best professional golfers competing for a purse of $6.7 million.
