Almost 200 local charities, schools benefit from Farmers Insurance Open PGA Tour Event
SAN DIEGO - The Century Club of San Diego, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization and the host of the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open, will hold a luncheon at noon at Aug. 24 at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, Regency Ballroom to announce $1.36 million raised during the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open to benefit nearly 200 San Diego area charities.
Jim Horton, 2011 president, said combined Century Club programs have raised nearly $22 million for San Diego charities since 1968. In addition to raising money for important local causes, the annual PGA Tour tournament provides an economic impact of more than $30 million for the San Diego community.
Recipients from the 2011 tournament at Torrey Pines included 91 high schools that participated in the Century Club's annual Support our Schools (SOS) program, which allows local high schools and middle schools to sell specially discounted any-day tickets for $17 to the annual Farmers Insurance Open and keep $15 of their sales.
The 2011 tournament raised $321,860 for the schools. Since its inception, the SOS program has raised nearly $7.5 million for local schools. In addition, the Century Club announced successful participants in its Chip-In for Charity program, which has raised $770,000 since its inception.
The top-selling schools to be honored on Aug. 24 include: Cathedral Catholic, $66,453; Rancho Bernardo High School, $28,645; La Costa Canyon High School, $21,658; Mater Dei Catholic High School, $17,000; and Mt Carmel High School, $16,524.
In addition, the Century Club will present checks totaling $100,000 to several military charities, including Wounded Warrior Project, Naval Special Warfare Foundation, and Semper Fi Fund.
The SOS program has enabled schools to invest in enhancement of locker rooms, installing new turf for playing fields, buying team uniforms, buying band equipment and funding dance programs. The Chip-in funding has helped provide funding for animal shelters, services for the homeless, enhancement of confidence building programs for youth, numerous senior services programs and the military programs.
In addition to Horton, speakers during the luncheon program include: John Chisholm, community branding manager for Farmers; Robert Horsman, regional chairman of U.S. Bank, SOS Sponsor; and Matt Borer, senior director, ResMed, sponsor of Chip-In For Charity.
