San Diego Padres Announce New Partnership with Century Club of San Diego
and Farmers Insurance Open
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have formed a partnership with the Century Club of San Diego to become a regional sponsor of next week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Padres Vice Chairman and CEO Jeff Moorad made the joint announcement with Tom Wornham, President & General Chairman of the Century Club.
“In this new and unique endeavor, the San Diego Padres are continuing their long legacy of a strong commitment to the San Diego community,” said Padres Vice Chairman and CEO Jeff Moorad. “This golf tournament has long been part of the fabric of San Diego, providing needed resources to many charities and recognizing and rewarding thousands of military families in our area. We are proud to link our brand to this jewel event in San Diego.”
The Padres’ new relationship is centered on the tournament’s military events, including sponsorship of the Military Appreciation Pavilion, participation in the Military Luncheon and support of the Military Pro-Am. The Pavilion, located on the 14th Green, is a popular free venue for military members attending the tournament and is open only to active duty military and their families.
Proceeds from Padres merchandise sold at the tournament will be donated to the Fisher House, located at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. The Fisher House serves as a home away from home for families who are coping with the medical crisis of a loved one who has served his/her country and have no local accommodations. The Padres Foundation has donated the first $5,000 to this worthwhile facility.
“We are privileged to have the Commander of Navy Region Southwest, Rear Admiral William D. French, here today representing the entire San Diego military community as we announce this donation to the Fisher House and our continued support of the military,” said Padres President & COO Tom Garfinkel. “We consider it an honor to support the more than 800,000 active duty, reserve and retired military personnel and their dependents and the many veterans in the San Diego region.”
In conjunction with the military sponsorship, the Padres are proud to extend and expand their military recognition efforts during the 2010 season. Military appreciation pricing will be in effect for all games as it was in 2009. The Padres will continue to honor the military during Sunday home games – players will wear camouflage uniforms and Marine recruits will be recognized. New this season, military personnel in uniform may purchase tickets at 50% off regular price at all Sunday games in 2010.
“We are thrilled to be able to announce our new strategic partnership with the San Diego Padres,” Wornham said. “Our hope at the Century Club is that our two great organizations can combine our firepower to help even more San Diegans. The tournament generates $30,000,000 in positive Economic impact to the San Diego Region every year. We believe that by co-branding, cross-marketing and just simply working together with the San Diego Padres we will be able to increase our annual charitable activities as well. In addition to serving the military and their families; local charities benefit by over $2,300,000 a year as a result of Century Club-related activities.”
Native San Diegan Phil Mickelson, a three-time champion of the event, will make his 2010 PGA Tour debut at the Farmers Insurance Open.
“Being a San Diegan, I am a huge Padres fan,” Mickelson said. “So, when I heard about the partnership between the Padres and the Century Club, I couldn’t have been more excited. It encourages me and shows me what a class organization the San Diego Padres are. I appreciate the Century Club for all they have done over the years in making the Farmers Insurance Open such a huge success. I hope to see all the Padres fans and golf fans out at Torrey Pines this year.”
